Rich or Poor?
My wife and I have a little inside joke, “Are we rich or are we poor?” I retired at 48 and never have to work again, so we must be rich, right? But we have only 1 car, live in a studio apartment, and have a grand total of $100 worth of furniture, so we must be poor, right? We live in a very desirable part of town so we must be rich, right? But we never eat at restaurants and my whole wardrobe can fit in a small suitcase, so we must be poor, right? I have more freedom than some rich people, and fewer possessions than some poor people. What does that make me (upper, middle, lower class)? Neither rich, nor poor (nor middle class) truly defines where I am.
I think we need a new word to describe the minimalist who trades possessions for more freedom…..the freedom class? Or maybe the opt out class because you chose to opt out of defining your success based on your possessions.
